Google SynthID Detector Simplifies Watermark Detection and Expands Support to Other AI Providers
Watermark checks that work across several AI providers could give publishers and schools a more reliable signal than guessing-based text detectors.

SynthID Detector widens watermark checking, but a "no" still proves nothing about who made the file
Google DeepMind has made SynthID Detector globally available, InfoQ reported in October 2026. Users upload an image, audio or video file at SynthID.com, and the tool checks it against watermarking schemes from several providers. OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao are covered now, and Apple support is expected soon. Previously the only route was asking Gemini, which recognised only Google-generated content. Anything from other vendors meant using each vendor's own tool. The result is a yes or no.
What does SynthID Detector actually check?
It checks uploaded image, audio and video files for watermarks from Google and its partners. The answer comes back as a yes or no, with no probability score.
The change is mostly convenience. Instead of running a file past several vendor tools, you run it through one site. InfoQ lists image, audio and video as the supported types. It does not mention text. The copy of the article I worked from also cuts off just as it reports a caveat Google raises about the yes/no result. I can't tell you what that caveat says, so read Google's own documentation before relying on the output.
Does a yes or no answer settle whether content is AI-made?
No. A yes means a participating provider's watermark was found. A no means only that none was found, which cannot show human authorship, because tools outside the scheme leave nothing to detect.
This is the main difference from the classifier-style detectors our readers know, such as GPTZero, Originality.ai, Turnitin and Copyleaks. Those guess from statistical patterns. A watermark check is closer to reading a signature: reliable when the signature is present, silent when it isn't. The coverage I read gives no accuracy figures, and no one is named as having measured performance on cropped, compressed or re-encoded files. A watermark that survives only clean files is much less useful on files that have been shared around the web.
Which providers are covered, and what is missing?
OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao are covered today, with Apple expected soon. The coverage does not name Anthropic, Meta or the many smaller and locally run generators.
Coverage here means membership in a partner scheme. A model run locally, or a tool whose maker never joined, produces files this checker can't flag. Humanizers and paraphrasers also work outside the scheme. Our reviews of the Uncheck and StealthWriter humanizers ask whether text slips past detectors. A watermark approach asks a different question, and for the media types listed here it sidesteps that arms race only when the generator took part. If you publish or buy written content, nothing in this announcement as reported changes your text-detection workflow.
What should a buyer ask their vendor?
Ask whether the vendor reads SynthID or other watermarks. Also ask what it reports when no watermark exists, and how it separates "not detected" from "human-made" in its reports.
If a detection vendor adds watermark lookups, treat them as one signal and not a verdict. Ask who produced any accuracy claim and on what files. Ask whether a negative result is worded as "no watermark found" or as "likely human". Finally, ask which providers are in the lookup, and whether the vendor will tell you when that list changes. Policies for schools and publishers should be written around the narrower claim, not the broader one.
Frequently asked questions
Does SynthID Detector identify AI-written text?
The coverage lists image, audio and video uploads only. Check Google's documentation before assuming it handles text.
When will Apple be supported?
InfoQ says Apple support is expected soon and gives no date.
Can a negative result be used as proof of human authorship?
No. It shows only that no supported watermark was found, which leaves out non-participating tools and files whose watermark has been degraded.
