Wikipedia, Podcasts & Reddit Now Drive AI Citations, Ask Your PR Team How They Did It

Answer engines lean heavily on Wikipedia, Reddit and podcasts for citations, so earned presence there may matter more than your own pages.

Wikipedia "fixes" won't buy AI citations, and your SEO vendor should know it

Search Engine Journal reported on 30 September 2026 on a session at the PRSA Northeast District Conference, held at Bentley University. Josh Greene of The Mather Group and Lauren Cobello of Leverage with Media PR told a PR audience that Wikipedia, podcasts and Reddit now feed AI answers. The numbers came from three vendors. Muck Rack analysed more than 25 million AI-cited links and found Wikipedia is the most-cited domain in ChatGPT. Ahrefs puts it high in Google AI Mode, and Profound calls it ChatGPT's default knowledge layer. Muck Rack's Generative Pulse 2025 report adds that 42% of Wikipedia citations in AI answers go to pages about processes, technologies or methods. The column's author, who has taught an online PR course since 2006, argues that SEOs should borrow PR's skills.

What does the 42% figure actually tell you?

Muck Rack's Generative Pulse 2025 report found that 42% of Wikipedia's citations in AI answers point to pages on processes, technologies or methods rather than brands or people.

The denominator is Wikipedia's own citations, not AI answers overall. It says what kind of Wikipedia page gets cited, and nothing about how often your category triggers a Wikipedia citation. It is also a 2025 snapshot, and retrieval behaviour in these products changes without notice.

Muck Rack chose the sample, the prompts and the definition of an "AI-cited link". The coverage doesn't say which. A citation also isn't a click, a mention or a sale. Treat the figure as a hint about where to look, not a forecast.

Can my company or agency just write the Wikipedia page?

No. Wikipedia wants neutral content verifiable against independent sources. It discourages employees from editing their own organisation's page, and it rejects press releases, sponsored posts and brand-representative interviews as sources.

The sources it welcomes, per the article, include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and peer-reviewed journals. So the lever is earned coverage in outlets of that kind, which a page can then cite. Editing the page is not the lever.

That matters for procurement. An agency that promises a "Wikipedia presence" is either describing a long earned-media programme or proposing edits that run against the guidance as reported. Find out which before you sign.

Are podcasts and Reddit in the same position?

The author says podcast transcripts become lasting training data and Reddit threads appear in Google AI Overviews by the millions, but the introduction attaches no named study to either claim.

Wikipedia gets named analyses from three vendors. The podcast and Reddit claims, at least as framed up front, get assertion. Training data and citation are also different mechanisms. One shapes what a model knows, the other what it retrieves when answering. The article's framing runs them together, and a buyer shouldn't.

Note who is speaking. Cobello runs a PR agency, and the article's author sells PR-adjacent teaching. None of that makes them wrong, but the recommendation to spend on podcasts and earned media comes from people who sell it.

What should I ask my SEO or PR vendor?

Ask which dataset they measure citations against, who chose the prompts, what your baseline was before work began, and whether any Wikipedia work involves edits by their own staff.

We have covered a run of answer-engine optimisation service launches and "best tools" lists. Their shared weakness is that the vendor defines the visibility score and also reports it. If a vendor cites Muck Rack, Ahrefs or Profound, ask for your own category's numbers rather than the cross-industry ones.

This also sits beside Google's recent advice, which we reported, that AI-assisted content should be fact-checked before publishing. Third-party signals don't excuse weak or wrong pages on your own site.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wikipedia really the most-cited source in ChatGPT?

Per Muck Rack's analysis of more than 25 million AI-cited links, yes. Ahrefs and Profound also point to its prominence. That measures citation frequency, not influence on purchases.

Should employees edit their company's Wikipedia page?

The guidance as reported discourages it. Content must be neutral and backed by independent sources, not a press release or company blog.

Does this show PR beats SEO for AI visibility?

No. The figures reported are citation shares, not campaign results. It is a conference talk relayed by a columnist who teaches PR.
